Ever wonder what those purple, yellow & green concealers are used for? No, they aren’t face paint. In fact, they’re your best friend when it comes to covering up scars, acne, and blemishes (bruising, too!)
First, let’s try to understand the color wheel (see above for reference)
In order to neutralizer a color, you must use it’s opposite on the color wheel. For example, to cover red blemishes you would neutralize it with a green concealer; to neutralize blue, you would use a yellowish concealer, etc.
Look at your acne, blemish, scar or flaw and decide on what color it is. Is it red (acne), is it blue (under your eyes), or is it yellow (like a bruise)?
If your blemish red (ie. a pimple, rosacea, bumps & blotches):
- Use a green concealer to neutralize this imperfection.
- Green concealer minimizes redness.
- Dab it on with a finger or a sponge and blend it out, thoroughly.
To cover the bags under your eyes:
- This area is, generally, blue in color. Use a yellow concealer to neutralize the bags.
- Yellow concealer counteracts discoloration
- Use your ring finger to gently apply the yellow concealer under your eyes and on the sides of the bridge of your nose.
- This is a very delicate area, always use your ring finger because of it’s light touch
- A purple concealer can be used to cover up dark bags under the eyes
- This type of concealer can also be used for covering up sun spots or dark spots
NOTE: you should always apply a concealer that matches your skin tone over top of the colored concealer to even it out.
Smashbox and NYX (the cheaper option) makes color-correcting concealers that blend easily and create thin, smooth even base. If you warm the concealer between your fingers, it makes it easier to apply!

This is a great reference tool. I am going to pick up some green and purple concealer for my acne scars and dark spots.

Hey Leesh! How dark are the spots? Yellow might work to cover it up!

Finally someone that explains the color wheel and use of the different colored concealers. I’ve watched videos, but can’t use sound so I needed something in writing. The pictures were a great help as well! Thank you.
