On our wedding day, we want our skin to look flawless and natural. We want the makeup to sit nicely on our skin without caking or blotching. Although makeup application technique has a lot to do with this, prepping your skin for the big day is just has important!
6 months (ish) before your wedding day, start a skin care routine, visit a dermatologist (if needed), and get monthly facials. Yes, you need to be thinking about your skin this far in advance! Be sure your last facial is a week or two away from your wedding day.
A few weeks before your wedding, start drinking your daily cups of water! This will help hydrate the skin, leaving a youthful flow. Try not to change anything in your diet or skincare routine- this can cause break outs!
In the days leading up to your wedding, get your eyebrows done, your lip waxed, avoid any tanning beds, and keep drinking that water! Steer clear of salt as that tends to puff up the eyes.
The night before your wedding, remove your makeup, cleanse, exfoliate (don’t forget your chest & neck), and moisturize. Be sure to exfoliate the night before because your skin can become red and/or sore. This ensures a clean, smooth slate the next day.
On the morning of your wedding, prep your skin for your makeup artist- unless he/she is doing to for your. Discuss skin prepping with them at the time of your trial.
If you’ll be prepping the skin yourself, here’s what you should do:
- Cleanse your skin (again) and thoroughly rinse it off.
- Pat your face dry with a clean face towel- no scrubbing!
- Using clean fingers, apply your serum (if you have it incorporated into your skincare routine). Serums soothe the skin and seal in moisture.
- Next, hydrate your skin. Press the moisturizer on your face with the pads of your (clean) fingers to stimulate the cells.
Priming your face before makeup application is something your makeup artist should be doing. Primers are used as barrier between skin and makeup- they prevent the skins natural oils from mixing with the makeup.
Providing you’re not allergic to silicone, the best primers are silicone-based. These types of primers fill in fine lines, wrinkles, and any other crevices on your face.
Don’t forget about your lips!
To ensure your lips are kissable on your wedding day, start exfoliating once a week, and once the night before your wedding! There are a couple of ways to do this:
- you can apply a balm, let it set for a couple of minutes, and then scrub it off with a clean towel, or;
- apply a balm, let it set, and scrub it off with a clean, wet toothbrush using gentle, circular motions.
After exfoliating the lips, apply a hydrating balm (something infused with Vitamin E) before bed and again in the morning, after you’ve finished prepping your skin!
sidenote: each of the products you use should be specific to your skin type. If you’re unsure of what that is, you could consult a professional or you could figure it out on your own by reading this!
